K-W Reception Centre is a temporary home for government-assisted refugees. Approximately 280 newly-arrived refugees and about 100 secondary migrants are served each year. We provide temporary accommodation for up to two weeks. During their stay at the Reception Centre, we provide orientation, both through discussion and hands-on experience; we are the first stop in learning about how to better adjust to living in this new society. During their stay with us, we assist each person or family to find permanent accommodation. As well, these newcomers are helped to register for necessary documents such as OHIP and SIN, to become familiar with the Canadian banking system, and to get assessed in their language acuity. Our most important task is to ensure that our guests feel welcome, safe and secure in their new environment.
